Free and low-cost family things to do around Kissimmee

Osceola County has a lot more going on at zero cost than most people realise, particularly if you have recently moved here and your mental map is still mostly theme parks. Here is what local families actually use.

The library system is the best deal in the county

It is not a consolation prize. Osceola Library System branches run story times for babies and pre-schoolers, summer learning programmes, teen sessions, homeschool support and phonics kits, and they lend far more than books. A library card costs nothing and covers ebooks and audiobooks at home, which matters on the afternoons nobody wants to leave the house.

Parks, splash pads and the lakefront

Kissimmee Lakefront Park is the obvious one and deserves the reputation: a long path along Lake Tohopekaliga, a marina, a playground and a splash pad, with parking that does not cost anything. The city runs a wider network of parks and recreation programmes, and Osceola County adds more, several with covered pavilions worth knowing about in August.

Free days and resident rates worth knowing

• Several Central Florida attractions run Florida resident rates and payment plans that are not advertised to visitors
• Museums in Orlando frequently hold free or reduced-admission evenings, usually monthly
• Farmers markets in downtown Kissimmee and downtown Orlando cost nothing to walk around
• Public libraries lend passes and kits well beyond books, including museum passes in some systems
• School district and county family events cluster in the weeks before the school year starts

Back to school season

August is the busiest month in the local family calendar. Churches, the county and community organisations run back to school events across Osceola with supplies, haircuts, food and often health checks. Solid Rock has held a back to school gathering as part of its community outreach, and the church calendar is where dates appear as they are set.

Things that are free because somebody chose to make them free

It is worth saying plainly that a lot of what is on this list exists because a library board, a city council or a congregation decided that a family should not have to pay to have somewhere to go. Community events at Solid Rock work the same way: the games, the food and the bounce houses at an outreach day are free because the point was never to sell anything.
